On a few occassions, I asked SD Smith what the SD stood for and he always claimed that was really his name.  Once when I asked my grandmother, Amie the same question, she said she thought his name was really SD, but he was named after both of his grandfathers, Sam and David.  Since we know SDs grandfather on his fathers side was David, I am assuming that his grandfather on his mothers side is named Sam Robinson.

1920 Census shows Sallie and husband Lenard Smith and family

Sometime in the 1920s, Lenard, SD and his new wife Amie, breifly moved to Akron, OH and Detroit, MI.  Lenard wanted to move back to Tennessee, and Sallie didn't want to, and stayed in Ohio.  Lenard, SD and Amie moved back to Sumner County, TN. 

She spent the later years of her life living in Pheonix, AZ, so I never got to know her well.  She developed cancer in 1960, and her son SD went to AZ and brought her back to Indianapolis, where she died shortly thereafter.

  The picture below is pretty much exactly as I remember her.  Me and my sister used to giggle about the fancy can she carried around to spit in.
