Lenard O. Smith was born 24 Aur 1875, probably in Jackson County, TN, the son of David C. Smith and Francis Callie Smith. He is shown with his parents and siblings, Bettie S. and Laura B.  in the 1880 census below.  Lenard's father, David, was probably a poor farmer who relied entirely on his farming to make a living.

Lenard ran a small store in Sumner County when his son SD Smith was running his delivery business in the early 1930s.

By 1920 Lenard had moved from Jackson County and was a farmer in Sumner County, TN.  His son, SD, also worked on the family farm at the time.  Everyone in the family could read and write, except for Earline, who was only 6 at the time.
