SD Smith was born on March 3, 1903, probably in Jackson or Sumner County, TN.  SDs father, Lenard was previously living in Jackson County, TN, so SD may have been born there.

1920 Census shows SD as a child with his parents, Lenard O. Smith and Sallie (Robinson) Smith.  Lenard was working as a farmer and 16 year old SD was working with him as a farm laborer.

The 1930 Census shows that SD has become the head of household and was working as a Merchant.  His father Lenard, who was living with SD, was now working as a clerk in SD's store.  SD had married Amie Myrtle Smith and by now had children Fred Dwight Smith(1) and William Smith(5).  SD was soon to open a delivery services, where he picked-up and delivered goods for various clients in surrounding counties.

About 1938 SD sold his property in Tennessee and moved his family to Indianapolis, IN.  After staying with his uncle Edgar of a short time, he and his family moved into a house at 321 S. Rural Street.   He got a job at International Harvester, where he would work for the rest of his life until retiring as an inspector.  He then bought a house at 40 N. Randolph in Indianapolis.

After retiring from International Harvester, SD and Amie sold their house on Randolph and moved to Fox Harbour Apartments on Indianapolis south side to be closer to their son Fred.

SD was proud to be a Mason, and insisted that he be buried with his Fez on and with the Masonic emblem displayed on his tombstone. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Indianapolis.
