Mary Miller was born in February of 1884 in probably Jennings County, IN, the daughter of John O. Miller and Jane _?_ Miller.  She married David Spaulding abt 1900.  Mary and David Spaulding had 3 children, Ada (1902), Eliza (1903) and Violet (1907).  David died sometime between 1910 and 1920, and Mary married Jesse Rutledge.  Mary and Jesse had one son, Charles Rutledge.

Evidence I have found indicates that Mary and her family were very poor when growing up.  Her father John could not write and worked as a laborer all his life.  He and his 5 children lived with other members of their families in all evidence I found after 1880.

My sister, Dana Smith, and I stayed with grandma Rutledge in Greenfield IN for the summer of 1956.  The house still had an outhouse for a restroom.  I like pancakes and my sister prefered french toast, so french toast and pancakes on alternate mornings for breakfast.  I remember her as strict, but never mean.
