Harry Cleveland Holmes was born 31 JAN 1885 in Sumner County, TN, the youngest child of Calvin B. Holmes and Amanda Rippy. His twin brother, Marshal H. Holmes, died shortly after birth.

The 1910 Census  shows that Cleveland was already married to Nettie at age 24. It also shows children Loyd and Amie at age 2.

The 1920 Census  shows that Cleveland was already running the store by then at age 34.

Cleveland owned and operated the General Store in Anglea aka Angeltown, that he bought about 1920. It was a general merchandise store which sold everything from shugar and coffee to horse shoes and nails.

The store was originally built by Bert Anglea in the 1870s. Previous owners of the store were Bob Reddick, Malachi Rippy, Bot Thornton and Jim Gray. The store closed after Clevelands death in 1961.

Amy moved with her family to Indianapolis around 1937. She worked at Service Products in Indianapolis.

William Smith, aka Bill or Dickie, was the first child. He was 4 years older than Fred but they were best of friends. A funny story Fred told was when they were young Bill and Fred slept in a room that was adjacent to the room where their parents slept. Bill told Fred to yell “Stop digging those taters in there and get up and fix some breakfast”, which he did. SD didn't think it was so funny. When they returned home they found that their beds had been moved upstairs.

Once when Bill did something bad, Amy made Bill go out to the peach tree and cut the switch she was going to use on him. He went and got the switch and gave it to her. When she hit him with the switch it immediately broke into pieces from where Bill had put notches in the branch. Amy couldn't help but to start laughing, and told him to just get out of here.

Bill was the first of the family to come to Indianapolis. He arrived a couple of weeks earlier and moved into he aunt Paulines home until the rest of the family arrived. He got a job as a bicycle delivery boy. Although he was thin and weighed maybe 160 pounds, he was a bouncer at a bar that had a reputation of being one of the roughest bars in Indianapolis, the Hollywood bar.

Bill was killed when a gun “accidently discharged” in a bar he was in, striking him in the stomach.
